David graduated from the University of Aberdeen as a Medical Practitioner in 1988. He received a Masters of Sports Medicine from University of New South Wales in  2003, and is a Fellow of Sports Doctors Australia. He is the Medical Director for the Gold Coast United Football Club, Gold Coast Blaze Basketball Team  and the Gold Coast Breakers Rugby Union. He has practiced exclusively in sports medicine since 2001.
